Q: As most people know you have been an athlete all your life and a very successful in track and field, but how did you first get into the fitness industry?
Erin: I first got into the fitness industry on a whim. I missed the Olympic Qualifying Standard in the high jump by 3 cm, and needed something else to train for. A friend suggested figure competitions, and after winning my first one, I was hooked! I ended up going Pro at my third show, and winning the Olympia less than 2 years later!
Q: We saw you recently release a “6 Days of Squats Program”… What inspired you to release this 28-day training/nutrition program?
Erin: The clothing line inspired the program! I thought, what better way to test out Squatpants than by squatting 6 days a week? The program is more than that though. It’s a comprehensive training plan for upper and lower body. Most of the days of squats are glute activation exercises, along with upper body training. Two days per week are dedicated to leg training.
Q: There is also talk of a Stern Apparel line coming out, can you tell us more about this?
Erin: We’re working on it right now! The goal is to create clothing that’s stylish and performs well. I have put on so many pants that are sheer, don’t stay put, and just don’t fit. I think everyone should feel confident about themselves and confident in the clothes they wear.
Q: Since you’ve taken a step back from competing on the stage, what’s next competition wise for you?
Erin: Great question! Some of my former teammates are doing a Spartan race, and I might join in. Otherwise, I plan to compete in some shooting competitions!
Q: What kind of training program do you currently follow to meet your personal goals?
Erin: I have been creating my own training programs since after college…it’s a potpourri of disciplines. I still perform Oly lifts 2-3x per week, and do plyometrics once a week. Right now, I’m working on putting on some muscle, so I tend to train with higher volume and at a slower tempo. The split is: 2x week for legs, 2x a week for shoulders, a back day, and a chest/arm day. I do HIIT 2x a week, and maybe 1x a week of steady state cardio, like walking.
Q: Do you have any supplements you recommend to help aid your training?
Erin: Absolutely! I love taking BetaTOR and PEAK ATP about 30 minutes before training. This helps me train with more intensity and I seem to get more reps. I also love HMB at night before bed. I’m less sore when I take it!
Q: You’re always in fantastic shape year-round! Do you have a specific nutrition plan or tips/tricks that you follow to help you maintain your physique?
Erin: Thanks! And yes, don’t diet! I think mindset is so important. If I don’t consider a food “off-limits”, I won’t crave it. I also eat the majority of my calories before and after training. I don’t eat before bed, and I eat less when I’m sedentary. Nutrient timing, I think, is more important than actually counting calories.
Q: What is one of your favorite go-to healthy recipes?
Erin: This is so simple: 1/2 cup gluten-free oats, 1 cup egg whites, ½ scoop of protein power, stevia, and cinnamon. Mix all ingredients and let sit for 5-10 minutes. Pour into a pan and cover. Cook 8-10 minutes…voila! Instant protein pancake! I eat it almost every day!
Q: Since the holidays are right around the corner, what’s your favorite treat to indulge in during the holidays?
Erin: I make peanut butter fudge. It’s so rich, you can only have a little at a time. It’s like rocket fuel to me!
Q: The New Year will be here before you know it, what advice do you have for those getting back into their fitness groove?
Erin: Start now! Seriously, if it’s something that you really want, why does the calendar matter? Set objective goals, start small, and make steady progress. It should always be about a lifestyle adjustment, not a quick fix.
Q: Anything else that you would like to share with everyone?
Erin: I love being a part of this big fitness family! If you have fitness-related questions, feel free to contact me on social media!
Thanks Erin so much for your time and for all the great advice!
Erin: Thank you!!
