I walked away from this jiu jitsu tournament with a loss, yet gained some good experience. There was a very small turnout with the event being the same day as No Gi Worlds, so I only had one match, which ended by points.

The estimated start times for our matches were changed to an earlier time due to the low number of competitors, so my warm up time was less. I was happy that I did get a warm up roll before my match with a teammate who also coached me. I was less nervous than my last tournament, yet still a little more nervous than I’ve been in the past. My breathing has improved from last time, so my cardio felt good throughout the match.

I was pleased that I had the most ground time thus far for competitions. I’m usually standing and wrestling for a takedown or defending ones resulting in only a few minutes on the ground. There was a lot of movement throughout the match as well. I had several positions yet didn’t get any points for them since they were not held long enough.

My nerves had me a bit delayed in my movements where my mind and body aren’t in sync. Depending on how relaxed I feel, I’m not always fully present and responding as quick as I normally do. Each tournament is more experience for me and I always look forward to improving, win or lose.

I originally wanted to enter No Gi Worlds, which is usually the first weekend of November. This year it was changed to the same day as NAGA, so I’m competing on October 26th in Subfighter BJJ.  I’m looking forward to another tournament with fellow teammates.

I’ve been consistent with my strength and conditioning along with supplementing with BetaTOR and HMB to keep my stamina at its best and my physique in shape. Given it has been a busy few months outside of training, I’ve been moving forward successfully inside and outside of the gym. There are times when I get hard on myself when I want to do more than I am currently doing with my training and other goals, yet remind myself that there are only so many hours in the day. As long as I stay consistent in both, I am going in the right direction even if it is not as fast as I’d like. Since I’m very impatient, it almost always seems not as fast as I’d like. :)

I also just recently resumed my personal lessons with Jared (jiu jitsu instructor) now that he is almost healed from surgery. We haven’t had them since the spring and I very much missed them. He gives me a game plan, which helps me tremendously at competitions.

Check back for results after Subfighter tournament in next month’s blog!
Happy Training!
